Are you indispensable ?

If you read one business book this year, it's got to be Seth Godin's Linchpin.

The coming educational challenges

The knowledge explosion

This mind blowing video should raise several questions for all of us involved in the teaching of pathology residents.
1. While some would consider this video as fear mongering, I think the video shows both the challenges of globalization as well as the exponential increase in knowledge that is happening around us.

2. Are we preparing the residents for the challenges of the future ?. Should we demand more of residents ?. The competing countries mentioned in the video, certainly demand much more from their residents. Are there steps that we can take to keep our residents competitive.

Are we there yet

On Nov 25, 2008, I mentioned what I would look for as evidence of a market bottom. Let's see how those indicators (originally described by Don Coxe) are fairing.
1. Ted Spread: Has come down nicely.

2. BKX/SP-500 ratio: The banks should outperform the SP-500. This is happening as seen by the rising BKX/SP-500 ratio.

3. Falling VIX: It has been going down...moving in the right decision.

4. Dollar index: Needed to come down.

So atleast 3 out 4 indicators are moving in the right direction. So should you wait a bit more. Short termers, should note that the 200 day moving average is coming up for the SP-500, that's a 100 points of upside. Long termers may wish to wait until we have cleared the 200 day moving average (with perhaps a test of the 200 day MA).

Unfortunately they dont ring a bell at the bottom.

This is the best article that I know off, which explains the structure of the glomerular filtration system. Readers are encouraged to check out the article by Karl Trygvasson in the New England Journal of Medicine, 354:1387-401, 2006 for other pictures and details. Surgical and clinical pathologists will find that this will demystify the kidney ultrastructure considerably.
